The 4 Cs of Diamonds: Your Diamond’s DNA
Share
When you start looking at diamonds, you’ll hear a lot about the 4 Cs. These are the main qualities that determine a diamond’s value and beauty. Here’s a breakdown:
#1 - Cut: The cut refers to how well the diamond has been shaped and faceted. It impacts the diamond's brilliance and sparkle. A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully, making it dazzle like no other!
#2 - Color: Diamonds come in various shades, but the most valuable ones are colorless or near-colorless. The grading scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Keep in mind that a diamond's color can be subtle, but it still plays a role in its overall beauty.
#3 - Clarity: This refers to the presence of natural imperfections or inclusions within a diamond. The fewer the inclusions, the clearer and more valuable the diamond. Here’s a quick look at the clarity grading scale:
Flawless (FL): No visible imperfections.
Internally Flawless (IF): No internal imperfections, but may have minor surface blemishes.
Very Slightly Included (VVS1, VVS2): Difficult to see even under magnification.
Slightly Included (SI1, SI2): Inclusions that are visible under magnification but hard to spot with the naked eye.
Included (I1, I2, I3): Inclusions visible to the naked eye and may affect durability or appearance.
#4 - Carat Weight: Carat measures the size of the diamond. The heavier the carat, the larger and more valuable the diamond. However, carat weight alone doesn’t determine beauty – a well-cut, smaller diamond can be just as stunning!
